Vintage traditional Kokeshi by Sato Sashima
Master Sato Sashima (1907–1985) is considered the “champion of the sweet Tsuchiyu style.” The colors of the lathe-turned lines on the torso -red, purple, and black- are particularly elegant, and the bangs on the forehead are drawn with extreme delicacy. After the war, during the 1965–1974 period of the Shōwa era, the method of drawing eyes in the kujirame style (whale-like eyes) became more pronounced, giving the Kokeshi an intense expression.
