Vintage Yajirō Kokeshi by Okuyama Kuraji
Master Okuyama Kuraji (1934-2008) learned the art of kokeshi from his father. But he did not start working as a craftsman right away. He decided to do so as an adult, in the early 1970s.
This is therefore one of his first dolls, because, as you can see from the bottom, it is dated Shōwa period 47 3 = March 1973.
Moreover, there is a rather rare peculiarity: the doll is equipped with a rattle! Okuyama san inserted some rice into the doll’s head. It sounds very good!
A gem about him that we found in our kokeshi’s bible (kokeshiwiki.com): “He died on 21 September 2008 and was an unrivalled drinker.”
