Large vintage Naruko kokeshi by Satō Minoru – 41 cm
This doll has a very calm expression. But if you look closely at her fringe, some hair is out of place. Could that be why we like her so much? The chrysanthemum decoration is still very well defined in red, the green is very faded, as is often the case with vintage kokeshi. The body is very finely turned, it also has two grooves, top and bottom. Sato Minoru (1932–2021) began his work as an artisan in 1947. In 1968, he established his own workshop. His wife, Mitzuko, started painting his dolls in 1972. I wonder if this one was painted by her…
