Sosaku kokeshi “Spirit of Wheat” by Kishi Sadao – 49,5 cm
This Kokeshi, awarded in 1960, celebrates the Wheat Festival in Kurobe Gorge, with wheat as the central motif. The doll is lathe-turned and features a flowing form, with the body divided into sections that highlight the kimono through the “Shou sugi ban” burning technique, creating a three-dimensional effect. What we really find amazing is the way the artisan represents of the kimono that seems to gently wrap around the doll’s body, with the wood carved in a way that reflects the natural folds and movement of heavy silk. The waist is accentuated by a ring of different wood, and the face features angled eyes with a simple suggestion of lips. The hair is styled in a complex manner and falls on both sides of the face. The doll is signed by the artist and bears his red impressed stamp on the bottom.
