Vintage traditional Kokeshi by Ishiyama Kazuo
Ishiyama Kazuo (石山和夫, 1929–2017) was an important artisan of the Zao style. Born on April 28, 1929, in the village of Yamadera, Yamagata Prefecture, he learned the art of woodworking from his elder brother, Sanshiro. In 1956, Ishiyama started his independent career, producing kokeshi dolls characterized by stylized floral patterns, such as chrysanthemums, and smiling facial expressions. These dolls, with their characteristic smiles and slightly drooping eyes, were mainly created as souvenirs for tourists. His works are highly regarded for their attention to detail and adherence to the Zao style tradition. In the photo, he is on the left, alongside his brother, Ishiyama Sanshiro.
