Vintage traditional Naruko Kokeshi – 30 cm
Identifying kokeshi can often be quite difficult, but let’s start with the basics! Naruko is the most recognized style on kokeshi and is highly influential on other types. It’s distinguished by a straight body, slightly narrowing at the waist, with paintings of chrysanthemum, iris or peony. The hair is tied with red ribbons, shoulders are decorated with lathe lines.
This is an unusual Naruko face, because normally they have single eyelid. Made by master Takahashi Morio, older brother of Yusa Fukuju, but this is another story…
